With only one working week left until Christmas, a lot of us are left in a frazzle over what to gift people. If time is the one thing you don't have this silly season, consider gifting a subscription and share the joy throughout the year! Here's a few I know I would love to recieve, and I won't be the only one, so support local and get clicking!

1. I AM CO. DELIGHT BOX $39 - $350
For the health nut, or the one that intends to make lifestyle changes next year, the I AM Co. Delight Box is a fabulous way to trial new products. Buy one, or up to a years' worth at a time for that special person in your life. It really is one of my favourite subscription boxes available in New Zealand. Check out the website blog for awesome recipes, ideas and inspiration.

2. TOGETHER JOURNAL $50
For the Bride to Be, this is one of the most gorgeous Wedding Magazines available on the market. At only $50 for a 12 month subscription, it fits within most budgets, and is incredible value for money!
3. EVE LASHES $16.99 - $75
For the beauty addict, this subscription, it's just plain genious! Purchase anything from 2, up to 20 pairs monthly - whoever you are gifting to will never be without lashes! A huge benefit is that you can chop and change the lash styles in each subsciption, and shipping, like the other two options is free within New Zealand.

The Miraculous Facial Oil that is just that - MIRACULOUS

Time to take a little break from all of these gift guides and talk about something that is also totally relevant for this time of year - Allergies.

Growing up, I never expereienced hay fever, or any allergy-like symtoms. I had Eczema, but that phased out at an early age. So, for me to come out in a freakishly crazy, itchy rash all over my body last week - I just couldn't understand what was going on! Heck, I didn't even want to leave the house looking like that, and it took a huge hunk out of my self-esteem - I was fighting back tears at work for a solid two days. Even Antihistamine would not make this thing go away.

I was lucky enough to go to the races last Friday night for my partners work-do, and in the bathrooms were a number of samples of the Linden Leaves Miraculous Facial Oil, which I may have taken a few too many of! For three nights following, I slathered this all over the affected areas, and it just disappeared. Halle-freaking-lujah!

If I'm totally honest, if it wasn't for these samples I probably wouldn't have actively gone out and purchased this oil. It's a bit pricey, at $64.99, but a little does go a long way. On top of that, my original opinion of Linden Leaves was that it was a brand targeted towards older skin types. After reading up on how the brand came about and has developed over time, I'm now 150% totally sold. Take a read of their story here.

Now that my rash is gone, I've started using this oil on my face a night to help bring some moisture and balance back. It's early days, but I think it's safe to say this miracle worker is going to become one of my ride or die beauty products for years to come. 10/10 from Mama!

Your Christmas Gift Guide: Experience

If resorting to vouchers is all that's left, investing in something that's going to create memories is definitely the way to go. Check out this gift guide for all the experience related inspiration you need to get your mind ticking!

1. HANMER SPRINGS PAMPER PACKAGE $369
This package was probably the most favoured gift we received at our engagement party, and for couples in similar positions to us, having renovated all year, this is the perfect Christmas gift for them to have a little getaway amongst the madness! There's a number of packages to choose from on the website, just click here.

2. OUR DATE NITE EXPERIENCE $25 - $1475
I recently saw a collaboration with this fantastic company and She Said Yes blog - These guys can literally help you plan the perfect date night to suit any budget! For now, most of their packages are tailored to the North Island market, but they have plenty of experience working with South Island vendors, so before you discount them, definitely check out the website here, and send an email to info@ourdatenite.com.

3. THE DRAWING ROOM VOUCHER $100
Earlier this year, I went to an art class at The Drawing Room in Christchurch and had so much fun with pouring medium! You can check out my work here, excuse the terrible photos though! They have just moved to a fantastic new site, and offer a range of classes to suit most interests. Email paul@thedrawingroom.co.nz to get this seasons class options, prices and dates.

4. PAINT AND SIP STUDIO CLASS $50
You don't even need to be gifting to a budding artist to hand over this voucher, I went last year with a few girlfriends and had the best time painting our pets over nibbles and a few wines! We sent through pictures of our pets before the class and waiting for us upon arrival were our canvas' pre-sketched with our furry friends - foolproof! Paint and Sip have a huge variety of themes to choose from, there will be something you might just want to hang up on your wall afterwards. Children's classes run over the school holidays too, details can be found on the voucher page.

5. BREAK ONE CLAY TARGET SHOOTING $135 - $160
Gifting for someone who just wants to shoot some s**t, or is just a general thrill seeker? Clay target shooting is a great idea. Break One are located in Queenstown, and guarantee you will hit a target! There are plenty of crowds around the country that do this, just have a look online to find one suitable.

6. APPELLATION CENTRAL HELICOPTER WINE TOUR $975 - $1475
Now, you don't have to totally splurge and lay it all on with a Heli and Wine Tour, but this post is after all, about creating memories - so if it's in the budget I'd totally recommend! Appellation Central Wine Tours have a number of tour options from $199 upwards, and better yet, they can work to accommodate any special requests if there is a particular winery you would like to visit.

7. EPIC ADVENTURES FISHING TRIP $300 - $1500
Our family got together and purchased this experience for the men in our lives earlier in the year. They made a long weekend trip up to Auckland and had a whale of a time on the boat - excuse the pun... definitely money well spent! Check out Epic Adventures for more.

8. HIGHLANDS MOTORSPORT PARK FAST LAPS $295
Any motor-head needs to do this once in their lifetime! My pick is Fastlaps, but Highlands Motorsport Park have plenty of options available to suit the "need for speed" in that special someone you are buying for.

NEW YEAR, NEW YOU - NEW JOB?

Wow, what a week that has been. On a high note, us Cantabs had our annual Cup and Show week. On a not so high note, I spent the majority of the weekend with a stomach bug. And on a really low, totally over it note, most of New Zealand woke up to some serious rumbling in the early hours of this morning. Kaikoura is essentially cut off due to land slides and damaged roads, Wellington CBD is a mess - For once, it seems like Christchurch was resilient to the brunt of Mother Nature's force.

Today, I'm sitting on the couch working from home, and it got me thinking…

For some of us, it’s near the end of a miserable year at work, you’re over it, and the decision has been made that 2017 is the year to move on to (hopefully) better things. Believe me, I have been there. A couple of years ago, I was working for a company where I was bullied, where there was no career progression, all in all – no future, and funnily enough that took me into an eight month stint in recruitment.

By no means am I an expert, but I wanted to use my experience to share the factors I weighed up, and often ask others to weigh up before making the decision to move on.

Never ever, EVER let money be your main driver.

There’s a saying that you can only accept a counter offer once, and there are a few very good reasons for that. For one, if you’re already unhappy in your role, it’s only going to be a matter of time before the financial benefit is outweighed again by the environmental factors. Secondly, there’s the boy who cried wolf story, and we all know how that ends. You “threaten” to leave thinking that your current workplace will fork out an extra few thousand to keep you without actually having an opportunity lined up - Na ah honey, it doesn’t work that way, and you’ve already made the decision to leave so what is going to change to leave you fulfilled in your role? It’s a road I like to call the “emotional journey” and it is particularly applicable if you have another offer on the table. You have gone through the motions of determining why you want to leave, you’ve  secured interviews, you’ve invested a great deal of time and effort into researching and interviewing with a new company and you’re excited about the potential opportunities. To sum it up, you’ve checked out from your workplace, and you’re no longer interested in their story or what they have to offer.

There’s two things that aren’t going to look good on your CV. One is taking a “fill in” role until something better comes up. You need to sit tight and wait for the right opportunity. The second is getting to the offer stage of the interview process only to turn around and take a counter offer from your old work place. That’s why a good recruiter will a.) take the time to have a conversation about why you are ready to move on, and b.) won’t put you in a role below your skill set because they know you’ll be itching to exit the business within months.

Which is why it’s so important to firstly weight up the pros and cons of your current role, and ask yourself some serious questions.

You’re feeling stuck. Have you had a conversation with management about progression?
Progression doesn’t even have to mean a complete role change or promotion, it can simply be adding in some course work relevant to your role, or taking on a couple of extra tasks from another department. Maybe that means some tertiary papers, or mentoring a junior team member.
With the evolution of HR, many companies have invested greatly in improving culture and longevity in the workplace. They want to hold on to their top talent, but you need to let them know that you are invested in the company and are one heck of a motivated individual who wants to progress, and you will need to have a strong idea of how that may look. Obviously there are companies that are going to be the exception to this, but if you are in the lucky position where you enjoy your place of work, talking to management about progression opportunities is a good first step before throwing the towel in.

There are real cases out there where people are taken advantage of financially, but are you really being underpaid?
I once had to write my boss a three page essay on why I deserved a raise. I was 18 then, on minimum wage, and the following were all things I had to consider to aid my case. Take a look at salary surveys, talk to friends in similar roles. If you’re going to take this up with your boss, you’re going to need to be far more prepared than “I work hard so I deserve a raise”.  It’s only human to go for a little extra in the back pocket, because it’s a factor we can control unlike the people we work with and company culture. It’s so easy to convince ourselves that we deserve something if we know it’s going to be of benefit, but how are we to know if we really deserve to be rewarded? How have your performance reviews gone recently, have you had any good feedback? Where have you taken measures to go above and beyond the call of duty and improve yourself professionally? You need to be brutally honest with yourself about these things, and at the same time identify areas of improvement.

So you’ve gone through all of this, and the answer is still looking like you're ready to move on. Now you need to determine a few things about the non-negotiables for your new role. The below are some questions I would ask every candidate I spoke to:

1.       What type of culture are you looking for in a potential company?
2.      What size company do you like working for? This is more important than you may think - IE a big corporate, or do you prefer a smaller company where you can identify issues and rectify them easily?
3.      How do you want your new manager to treat you?
4.      What field/industry do you want to be in?
5.      Think long term about progression opportunities, where do you want to be in X years time? Bearing in mind an offer to progress may involving starting from the bottom again.

Now I’m not saying you should expect everything to be handed to you on a silver platter, especially if you are of a younger generation. GEN Y’s in particular have a reputation for wanting reward before the work is done, and that's just not going to fly. I worked pretty damn hard to get where I am. Countless weeks working 60+ hours, always putting my hand up to learn new tasks. I put up with 18 months of being held back and being told I wasn’t ready to progress by my own manager, despite competently taking over the tasks he was failing to complete while he was taking his daily three hour lunch break. People saw I was a hard worker, but I was miserable. The way I was feeling at work was creeping into my personal life and that made me re-evaluate things.

6.       What does work life balance mean to you?

Ah, work life balance – what does that mean to you?
I am a huge believer in work/life balance and making it work for each individual, because it needs to be tailored to our specific needs. For me, it’s an earlier start, early finish so I can get to the gym at a reasonable hour and have dinner before eight. It’s being able to work flexible hours, if I had a few appointments one week. It’s being trusted to do your role and not having management clock watch when you come and go. It’s the ability to work from home if I need to, and do my role from anywhere. For others, it may be fitting work around children, not having to travel more than 20 minutes to get to the office, having the opportunity to travel – or not at all. When you’re considering what balance means to you, be mindful that to tick all of these boxes, you may need to lower your salary expectations slightly, depending on your requirements. Also bear in mind the flipside – are you happy with where you are personally? Yes, a toxic working environment can make you miserable at home, but it can has just as negative an effect if you’re struggling to leave your personal life at the door before you enter the workplace each day.

I once interviewed a man who told me a story about being in a room full of people who were asked if they had their work life balance in check. He was the only one to put his hand up. He was also the only one who had been in a life threating accident, and apparently the only one to have his priorities in order. You don’t need to have a near death experience to get yourself in check, simply take some to figure out what is important to you and move forward from there.

Are you feeling like 2017 is the year for change? I'd love to hear from you and talk about your plans!

KEEP YO'SELF IN CHECK

My oh my, this time next week I’ll be up north for the New Zealand Olympic Weightlifting Nationals – what a cool feeling that is!

You know, I almost lost the plot after I qualified. Achieving that goal in itself was a freaking fantastic accomplishment for what has now been six months of training. It wasn’t that I didn’t want to work out anymore, more so the fact that I know placing at Nationals probably isn’t a realistic goal this year, so I’ve had to switch my mindset a little and accept that my ass is going out on that platform to compete only against myself. It hasn’t been all bad though, I’ve been able to take a step back and learn to enjoy training again now that the pressure is off, I can enjoy summer and cruise into next year knowing that the hard grind has been done.

With this in mind, I wanted to share with you all a couple words of wisdom from my fit-girl crushes – things I often read when the going gets tough, if I’m not feeling good about myself – whenever I’m having a moment, to remind me what I’m doing and why I’m doing it. Healthy advice FOR LIFE that we should all read at least once.

You’re not always going to see the progress. You’re not always going to feel great, or even “decent” for that matter. Sometimes you’re going to feel like shit. You’re going to doubt your abilities, doubt your strength and doubt yourself. You’re going to get frustrated and upset because you don’t understand why. It could be for a day, for a week, for a month, who knows. But it will pass. And only then will you realise that it was all a part of it. Part of the learning, building and growing. And you’ll be prepared for the next time things turn to shit. You’ll know to do what you can, when you can, with what you have been handed with all your effort. And you may not see the steps forward that you’re making, but you know for a fact that doing nothing is standing still.

ART EASY ENOUGH FOR A FOOL

I'd like to think I'm creative, but I'd find it hard to keep a straight face calling myself artistic - which is what lead me to this post. I've been looking for some cool DIY projects to transform the white walls of our home recently, and I wanted to make something that resembled the below...

Can't be too hard, right? Well, over the weekend I took my second ever art class at The Drawing Room in Christchurch and had the best time!

For those of you that haven't already heard of it, Pouring Medium in its most basic form is essentially an acrylic liquid that sets dry with a slightly glossy finish. You mix it with acrylic inks to make your colours and once you throw it on your surface, it's mixed around to create somewhat of a marbling effect. There are plenty of techniques to learn, but lets start at the beginners level.

You'll need to excuse my lack of photos, I got so caught up in the moment and forgot to take them at each step.

First up, here was our blank canvas. We had a pair of gloves, eight plastic cups (two in each corner) to sit the canvas on, a bottle of Liquitex Pouring Medium between two people, another five plastic cups to mix our colours and five popsicle sticks to use as our mixing utensils.

Next, we picked our colours. Below are the ones I have since purchased from The Drawing Room, but for this piece I used a pearlescent pink, cool grey, metallic copper, blue and white inks. If you are considering using similar colours it's important to note that the metallic and pearlescent hues aren't going to show up as opaque as regular colours, so have a play around first and see how they all react together. Oh, and a tiny splash of black goes such a long way!

Once our colours were chosen, we poured the medium into our cups, one per colour. For a canvas our size (24 x 24in) we used half a bottle of medium. I put a couple of squeezes (give or take) of ink into each cup, then took my popsicle sticks and mixed the colour through evenly. Then we poured! Not knowing any techniques, we just poured randomly, popping colour wherever we kind of thought we wanted to place it. I forgot to take pictures at this step, but here is one from The Mindful Artist for you to get an idea...

Now for the fun part. We picked up our canvas' and tilted them in all directions so the medium started moving all around the place. To stop wastage in the class, we couldn't go over the edges but I totally will for my next piece! You have about 10-15 minutes to work with the medium before it starts to set, so keep that in mind, and be aware of knowing when to stop as it's so easy to get carried away - therapeutic almost! I put mine down for a couple of minutes, then started moving it again which caused a few stretch marks once it dried, you'll be able to see in the dried image further down. If you want to see how this piece of the process is done, check out @lundstrompaintings on Instagram.

Here is my wet canvas...

To allow the medium to dry, we left our work at The Drawing Room overnight to dry. See below - and see how different it is to when I left it the day before?! Part of this is due to the stretching which I wasn't too happy with but it's all a learning experience!

The last three days, I've had my canvas sitting flat on a desk, to ensure it's completely dry before hanging. Tip - if it feels damp on the underside, do not hang it until it's dry. It may feel dry on top, but wet colour underneath can still slide. It's not quite what I envisaged, but hey - I'll just commission it once I'm famous!

I just love the marble trend, and even more so, monotone colours. For my next project I'll be replicating something like this, what do you think?

Let me know if you get around to trying this, or anything similar. I'd love to know what you did, how you did it and better yet - how it turned out!

ALL MY SINGLE LADIES

I’ve realised that I am in a funny age group now. All around me there are women determined to find their one true love, marry them and have children before they hit thirty. Tick all the boxes, so to speak. Their insecurities are slowly poking through, insecurities they shouldn’t have, and they need to read this.

You need to learn to love yourself.

Then, when you least expect it, that is when your knight in shining armour will come and sweep you off your feet.

The posts on Instagram #singlelife #wegotthis are all very well and good, but between that and the image of you done up to the nines with cleavage for Africa, even a stranger can see that you are lonely. Anyone who knows you understands how much you want a partner who thinks you are the world, but matching every man and his friends on Tinder and taking them all for a “walk in the park” is not the way to find love. Why is it that every man is going to be different? You see it time and time again how males work when you act in a way that shows little self-worth for yourself, they see you working your way through the crowd, show you a little attention, you take the bait and next you’ve just written another name in your little black book. It’s not open season, honey, and the hunt is tiring.

What is it about this day and age that requires the love of a man for a woman to be happy with herself? Why is it that women seek the approval of males around them? Confidence shines, girlfriend. You have a job, a family that loves you, a group of friends, plans for the future. Be proud of yourself and project that out to the world. That type of love is oh so infectious.

You don’t need a man to feel loved.

Look after you. Pamper yourself. Pop on some sexy lingerie and dance in front of the mirror. Wear that matching lingerie and take yourself out for lunch, alone. Learn to enjoy your own company and use that time wisely to set yourself some goals, to think and reflect, to focus on what makes you happy. The same goes for those of you who are unhappy in your relationship. What is holding you back from enjoying your life, and living it fully? You don’t deserve to be unhappy. You are not doomed if you happen to be single for a while. The future isn’t as scary as you work it up to be. Life always has it’s funny ways of working out, and I am one to whole heartedly believe that - I bet you’ve also heard that line a few times! You girl, are a strong, independent women and you can tackle the world on your own two feet. Go out there with that beaming smile of yours and get it!

SHE'S A GOAL DIGGER

** Cue the music **

I’d be lying if I said I could count the revisions of this post on one hand, for some odd reason talking about myself just doesn’t come naturally when I put pen to paper. This whole idea of this blog came about from injury, I had A LOT of time to kill after messing myself up in a car crash and I wanted to use my experience to inspire and educate others to improve their lifestyle and maintain it. Yet, it’s only now that I have found the drive to write consistently.

Not wanting to bore you with the long story, I sat on this post for a long time. It wasn’t until Sunday that I got some inspiration on a walk/run up to Godly Heads when Hubby to be took a photo of me – I managed to run more than 1km and I had abs. Yes, abs. I used to train twice a day and never had abs! Magic. Let's take a look at me looking tough with these babies, I'm pretty proud of what's come to the surface - it's taken a lot of mental and physical dedication.

Being body confident is such a huge thing for me. Gone are the days where breakfast consisted of chocolate milk and Kit Kat, present are the days where I just want to look fabulous over summer, be strong and feel damn good about myself. For me, before I went back to the gym I felt weak, I was weak, my booty was small and no longer toned. So, I decided to do something about it. The last five months has been only a small portion of my journey but I’ve noticed myself feeling more confident and accomplished with each goal I reach.

We all develop insecurities as we grow up. Not curvy enough, too much on the plus side, too muscly, too skinny, too hairy (amen to laser). No matter how much we know this act of body shaming needs to stop, we are so quick to tear ourselves apart right down to the smallest detail. But Why? It’s not going to make us any happier. Why is it that some of us need to wait until we hit rock bottom before we start to look after our bodies? It’s only going to add to the frustration when your milestones aren’t reached. Why not start now, pace yourself and ease into it?

We need to love ourselves, and part of that love needs to involve accepting our insecurities.  I’ve got broad shoulders and massive traps, in fact my nickname is “traps” but hey – I can’t do anything about that so why bother worrying? Focus on what you love about yourself, improve weaknesses where and if you can, and give yourself the confidence you deserve.

Back to those goals. I always had aspirations to compete in an Olympic Weightlifting competition, and a close friend of mine had recently made the transition from CrossFit to Weightlifting. I quickly followed her to Surge Performance and started training based solely around this – Goal one, complete. Within months, I competed in my first lifting competition – Goal two, check. And after a few more competitions goals three and four were achieved – I can now say I am just as strong as I was prior to my break, and I am five weeks away from competing in a National competition. I can’t run long distance (99% due to willpower) but, I feel strong and that’s what I wanted.

Had I not given myself small goals to accomplish, I really don’t think I would be sitting here writing this today. I made sure these goals were both achievable and measurable, and although I had a rough idea around timings, I didn’t set a timeframe around hitting them. The next goal was always in mind to keep me going. Looking back on previous months, weeks or even days is so important when it comes to reaching your goals and is something I constantly reflect on. Heck, five months ago I was struggling to lift a bar over my head, now I’m lifting a whole ME!

There is always a light at the end of the tunnel, you just have to start. Just like me, just like the person you idolize most in this world. What’s holding you back? Why would you wait until six months before your wedding to start “shredding” – wouldn’t you be happier if you started now? We both know that your body will certainly feel better! And what about those aspirations you have? Aside from maybe money, what’s stopping you going out and making it happen? Start planning, start networking and talking to people about your ideas – you never know what will come out of a simple conversation.

Well, that's me, so... What are you going to do?

A LITTLE REFLECTION

Some days call for a little more reflection than others, and for me, today is one of those days. Those of you who have been following me for a while now will recall that a year ago we had a house fire that forced us out of our home for what was to be the next six months.

Now, we all know that things are never done by halves in my life, and on the same night our Labrador Ella gave birth to nine beautiful pups, about a week earlier than expected due to the stress of the evening. Today is their birthday, and I have been sent some sweet messages and images from their owners that absolutely made my day. Here's Cooper with his birthday cake!

I know I won't be the only one out there that feels like they haven't been able to hit the pause button all year, but I want to encourage you to grab a bath, a glass of wine and some music and take some time to reflect on what you have a achieved this year - you'll be so, so surprised!

THE WEDDING GUEST LIST "HOW TO" THAT WILL KEEP YOUR SANITY IN CHECK

IMAGE COURTESY OF STYLE ME PRETTY

The Wedding Guest List. It's been a big topic of conversation in our household, and is still on going! To help make your lives easier, here's a few questions we have asked ourselves about who to invite to our big day. I’ll kick us off with one we got from close friends of ours:

  • Would you go to dinner with them, and I mean just them? This one helped us cull A LOT of people
  • Will you be friends with them in 10 years?
  • Do you see them regularly outside of work, gym, any activities?
  • And, most importantly are they absolutely over the moon for you two to get married?

Then there’s the controversial additions:

Plus ones
The on again off again partner, the friend of the friend who will know nobody else at your wedding, the ex of another guest who always makes a scene. You don’t need to feel compelled to hand out a plus one to everybody. If it’s going to keep the peace, maybe consider inviting the partner to the reception, or even just for a boogie and a drink later on in the night.

The Longest Standing Friends
You’ve had them as long as you can remember, but these days it’s a rarity to see them. If your relationship has been drifting apart for years, don’t feel the urge to invite them – the likelihood is that they probably aren’t expecting an invitation to come their way. If you really feel the need to include them, consider an invite to your hens or stag party instead.

Your Parents Friends
Their kids went to school with your other siblings, or they’re part of a group your parents belong to. Either way, your parents are adamant they want their attendance. No matter who they are, if you never see them don’t feel pressured to invite them – unless of course your parents are paying for the wedding, then you’re on your own girlfriend.

Children
It’s your big day, so if that means you want an adults only ceremony, go ahead cut the children out of the picture. Do be sure to clearly state this on the invite, so it’s out in the open and people can make alternate arrangements. And besides, who wouldn’t be thankful for a night off from their kids!?

You were invited to their Wedding
Now, usually it would go without saying that you reciprocate the gesture, however if your friendship has significantly faded since their wedding, or you are limited by numbers, don’t feel pressured to add them to your guest list.

When I hold events, I typically invite everyone I can think of, and I’m careful not to exclude anyone – cause nobody likes to feel left out, right!? But, the buck stops here for your wedding day! If you’re unsure about someone, or if anyone is less than 110% happy for you, don't feel pressured to invite them – it’s a privilege to be on a wedding guest list, and people understand that there after often limitations around budgets and venue capacity. Don’t be afraid to be brutal, it's YOUR day. End. Of. Story.
